Facebook.com have launched an open API to enable college developers to create mashups which leverage the Facebook paltform and its network of users.
This move indicates facebook's desire to provide more interesting services to fuel user adoption and is set to be the first foray into this area after plans to launch wirehog, a Peer-2-Peer service which utilised the facebook platform was shelved by Mark Zuckerberg in 2005. Facebook's large userbase will provide a plethora of opportunities for companies to "fuel-the facebook beast" much like the huge number of companies feeding the Myspace beast including RockYou, Slide and most recently Browster.
The URL is http://www.developers.facebook.com and enables developers to create apps with a facebook login and leverages the facebook network.
Showcased mashups include Facebank, which is a Billmonk style application to split bills between friends using the facebook login details and Photomosaic which enables users to create a mosaic of their facebook picture using friend's pictures.
The new open API will undoubtedly fuel many more interesting college mashups further cementing facebook's lead in this area.
Update: I'm putting together a group of developers and entrepreneurs to create viral Facebook mashups. Email me Sumon [dot] sadhu [at] gmail [dot] com if you are interested in brainstorming/getting involved
